It's an OEM Gigabyte GA-5SMM board for Compaq.

So, how important is the fact that this is the board for Compaq (by the way, yes, my PC is compaq presario)? Would it still be OK to download the latest version for GA-5SMM from Giga-byte web site and update my BIOS? Compaq does not offer any BIOS updates for this computer model. Please let me know...thank you!

You should use Compaq Bios - it's possible the gigabyte Bios work but it's also possible it does not work.

If your Flashrom is not soldered-in you may want to try the Ggabyte Bios but be prepared to know how to Recover a corrupted Bios and how to Hot-Flash a Bios.

thanks everybody for your replies. I also contacted gigabyte tech support and they confirmed their bios update could and should be used here. So I did it, using their @bios program and everything was easy and worked great. My second 80 gb hard drive is up and running smooth. So much for compaq tech support...according to them, there's no bios update for this model. what a joke! once again, thanks for your help!
