Hi,

I have an old chaintech mobo (5vgm m201 - intel i430vx chipset) and was wondering what cpu's this will support.
I have an old pentium 120 now running at 133 but would like to exchange this for a faster one.
Will a cyrix 6x86 pr266 work on this board (busspeed goes up to 75mhz so it would be running at 183mhz instead of 208mhz)?

Check for CPU VCore support as AJZ says...that will be the first hurdle.

The BIOS might be able to support (or be patched for) K6-2/III+ 450MHz (6x75MHz) if your i430VX will run at that speed...otherwise 6x66MHz for 400MHz is possible.

I haven't got the latest bios - it's listed at kariachi's but i can't download it?
Can't find it at chaintech either

And even if i was to plug in a k6-2 400 i could run it at 225 max, since that's the best the mobo will do (3x75)

So i think i'll try to find a pentium 200 or another cyrix cpu (somebody placed a higher bid on ebay ) and plug that in

I have fried another cpu on this board @225, but that was a pentium 166, and it ran smooth for more then 3 years - so i guess a pentium 200 might hold out somewhat longer

just one more question :
on the schematic the memory slots are marked as simm
this means i have to use one-sided memory modules, right?

A + series CPU would read 2x as 6x (CXT core), and use the least amount of current. You would need to be able to set 2.0V or 2.1V VCore however to use one.

Your manual does not show this setting, so you would have to try something undocumented, or change a resistor value. Otherwise, you need to look for a K6-2/III that runs on a 2.5V VCore (lowest documented setting) and doesn't draw a lot of current.

The board looks like it takes standard 72-pin SIMMS (32MB modules...128MB total).
