hope someone can help me. I work at a hospital, I needed to install an 80gb hd in a pc100 systemboard (socket 7, pcchips m585lmr) with an amd k6-2 cpu.

I updated the bios, everything went ok, but still, it only recognizes hds up to 32gb.

The bios string i have right know:

"11/20/2000-M585LMR+All-2A5LHH0CC-00"

is this the last update? There's no solution for this? My boss is going to kill me...

won't you please, please, help me?

It looks like the capacity limtation jumper is still set on your HDD - find out where this jumper is located and remove him. If this Bios does still hang please report back.

Well, that was the reason why it didn't recognize a 40gb hd. Now it does, just fine. But still, i need to install an 80gb hd, i tried a 60gb one, but nothing. Seems that the bios goes up to 40gb only...

thank you for the reply, hope you can help me with this

PD: My 80gb hd doesn't have any limitation jumper, and the bios doesn't recognize it at all.

Are you using 40-pin or 80-pin IDE cable?

The 80gb hs is currently working in another machine, i though the cable may be the problem, so i tried the hd with the same cable on this older machine, and it doesn't work.

Anyway, to anser your question, i don't know if it is 40 or 80, how do i know?

I have searched everywhere, i don't understand, it should work. May be the hd is just too new? I'm pretty sure i have the latest bios upgrade installed (11/20/2000), there isn't a newer version on the net.

Here's some info of the drive:

I notice that in your ftp site there a log of BIOS images of this mobo (and many others) although i have installed the latest one (2k1120), do you think an older one could work?

I don't think so.
I know last three BIOS versions are large HDD capables.
But you can try.

Is the HDD not recognized at all or does Bios hang during detection ?

There may be a parameter translation error if partitioned on a different motherboard especially with newer Award or AMI Bios.

If a motherboard supports 40GB then it must support 60GB, too, because there's no 60GB limitation in 4.51PG Bios. The next limitation is/was at 64GB and the max native support for this Bios kernel is 128GB

the bios hang during detection, like if it is trying to but can't detect it. What do you think i should try? The hd has 4 partitions, 2 ntfs, 2 fat32.

Well, first of all, thank you so much to each one of you for helping me, you've been really kind.

Now, this is quite embarracing, today i was staring at the hd (once again), looking for something that could make things happen. Anyway, theres was a sticker (with a code bar), wich was a little over the jumper configuration diagram. So, i removed this sticker and the setting for "Master" came to be "Master w/s". I guess that means "Master with slave". So, I removed this jumper and... voila!! It works just fine.

Besides my stupidity, I really appreciate your help, hope no one spent too much time/brains on this.
