My award bios doesnt support a 40gb disk

I have a Biostar motherboard

Bios date 06/16/00
Bios Award modular BIOS v4.51PG
Award ID-string i440ZX-SMC60X-2A69KB0JC-00
OEM Sign-On TZA0616D
Superio: SMC 60x rev 0 found at port 3F0h
chipset: i440ZX-SMC60X // Intel 440BX

I want to put a 40gb harddisk (WD400) in it but its not recognised.
Could you please inform me where i can find the Bios update and which flashprogram i can use best?

I couldnt find anything on the website of Biostar.

Quite strange... a BIOS of mid-2000 should support it correctly. Are you having it autodetected? Have you tried setting the parameters manually?

not recognized - check your cable connection or HDD positioning at the cable and/or the Master/Slave/CS/single-Master jumper settings.

Especially WD loves to be Sibngle-Master if no slave drive is present on the same cable.

With a Bios error regarding HD detection the Bios should freeze or display totally wrong numbers.

I had it autodetected, havent done the manually setting.

I have tried the disk as master as well as slave, both options failed.

I am afraid that maybe the secondhand disk is the problem, i will try to connect it in another computer this evening and see if it is recognised then.

Maybe the bargain wasnt a bargain after all

I had to take the jumper from the "master' setting, so didnt have to use the jumper at all.

As said, this awful Single-Master setting. I had the same problem with a WD drive about 5 years ago .....
