Edwin,

I have the following BIOS which I would like to upgrade:

Code: Select all

AMIBIOS 1996 (American Megatrends)
AP/AX 53 R3.6 Aug 28 1996

51-0411-001771-00111111-071595-82439HX-F
Any ideas where I could find the correct update file & BIOS upgrade utility?

Aopen AP53 or AX53. You have made a typo in the manufacturer that should be 001770 not 001771.

I checked this again, and no, I did not make a typo. It is 001771. If you Google on this number, you will find also some hits on this number as well.
Are you sure that these are for the 001771 model?

That is really weird. The ID string found inside the rev 3.6 of this bios is
51-0411-001770-00111111-071595-82439HX-000_10_T2
AP53/AX53 R3.60 Aug.28.1996

001771 would point at SYE/Luckytech and they haven't used AMI bios since their 486 boards. Only Award. Not sure what went wrong there.

I tried to flash that BIOS by using the most recent BIOS update I could find (AP53RSC0.EXE). After it was flashed, my CD Rom appeared to be working (could boot from it), but then suddenly the complete system froze and was dead after a cold restart... :-( The boot CD was a Smoothwall Linux (firewall) boot cd (version 2.0 - Express), which in the past I used already several times successfully.

So, the problem no longer exists... as I had to configure a complete new system to serve as Firewall... :-(

Thanks anyway to all those who replied!

Ah, that is something you can seperate an AP53 and an AX53 with then. The files I have here for the AP53 which were downloaded several years ago all have the correct 001770 coding.

I have a Aopen AP53 rev3.3,i430HX, socket 7,use AMI win bios,
support as low as 2.0V, so I upgrade from PMMX200 to K6-2-400
I download the newest bios,
ftp://ftp.aopen.com.tw/pub/bios/ap53/ap53r3c0.exe
ftp://ftp.aopen.com.tw/pub/bios/ap53/readme.txt
can't recognize K6-2-400,only show K5-133,
I use another pc of K6-2-400 on asus T2P4(i430HX),128edo ram as standard,it runs winxp fluently.
K6-2-400 on aopen ap53, 128edo ram run windows xp rather slow,processor always used 100%.
I run setk6v3,found that write allocation and write combination are disabled,I thought this is the reason why it is so slow.
I heared AP5K is the enhanced version of AP53,i430HX, same I/O.
I flashed bios of Aopen AP5K,it is award
ftp://ftp.aopen.com.tw/pub/bios/ap5k/ap5k150b.exe
the pc could still boot,
K6-2-400 showes as 486DX2-66;
but cannot detect floppy;
CDROM detected while not bootable;
but HDD boot to winxp and running very fast,simillar to K6-2 on asus T2P4setk6v3 showes write allocation enabled write combination disabled.
However,if change with another HDD,then the new HDD is not bootable.
I flash back bios between ap53 ami and ap5k award several times,
problem is the same,
ap53 too slow,
ap5k can't find floppy,can't boot from amy IDE device if changed HDD.
What can I do?
Thank you very much!

AP53 Rev 3.x should use 3.x Bios so this should be your Bios:
ftp://ftp.aopen.com.tw/pub/bios/ap53/ap53r3c0.exe

But it may not change the sluggy system performance as it seems to be of similar date as your 2C0 Bios.

It's very sad to see a good old i430HX board supporting 2.0 VCore but not receiving a somewhat recent Bios to support K6-2 CPU. Asus did the support job nearly perfect with their T2P4.

sorry,I made a typo,what I use is already the 3.x Bios,right from your link.I correct it to 3.0 now.
yeah, the old T2P4 runs perfectly,speed is not slower than TX97(430tx)+sdram,and much faster than newer super7 board with sis 5597/5598
