Hi,
When I connect my new Maxtor DiamondMax 80 to any of the IDE connections, BIOS HDD autodetect hangs and so does my system during startup (does not get to booting from existing drive).
I found out (thanks to this site), that I've got a Chaintech board, type 5TTM1 M201, but they don't seem to have a good update bios with large drive support on there site.
Current info:
BIOS Date: 08/19/97
BIOS Type: Award Modular BIOS v4.51PG
BIOS ID: 08/19/97-i430TX-W83977TF-2A59IC3AC-00
BIOS Eval: 08/19/1997
Chipset: Intel Triton 430TX rev 1
Superio: Winbond 977F/AF rev 0 found at port 3F0h
Can anyone help me out here? Thanks,
Bob
80Gb: 08/19/97-i430TX-W83977TF-2A59IC3AC-00
The latest BIOS is "04/13/98-i430TX-W83977TF-2A59IC3AC-00" at http://www.chaintech.com.tw/FILES/5xMB/5TTM1413.EXE. However, it will not support HDDs over 32GB. I can send you patched version if you want.

There's a wee-happy user on this end of the internet: it works! Autodetect recognizes the 80Gb, everything seems to work fine.
What most amazes me is that you can patch this (and other) binary BIOS file, to make this work.
Thanks very very much for helping me out, Rainbow.
