Hello Everyone
I am trying to upgrade to win xp from ME. I am doing a 'clean install'. I am having trouble copying files from setup cd and I suspect the bios is to blame. It is Award v6.00pg 1984-2000. the string is:

08-01-2000-693-596-8673-1A6LGC3CC-00. I think it might be a Chaintech Boardif I am reading the string right with VIA chipset and intel P3, but there is no model name or numbers to be found on the board. Help on this problem would be much appreciated.

Check your memory http://www.goldmemory.cz.
It's Chaintech 6VIA3 board and you have the latest BIOS.
Patched and tested BIOSes are at http://wims.rainbow-software.org

Thanks Rainbow
I was wondering if clearing CMOS and starting again might help

If the goldmemory test doesn't show anything funny, that might be the next step. Test yur memory first.
