I have fallen into the same trap before. Purchased 256MB RAM, attempted to install onto a BX board with latest BIOS, and it recognised 128MB.
I believe the largest RAM chip fully recognised is to do with a limitation in the chipset, not the BIOS. Apparently the BX boards will recognise double sided 256MB modules, not single sided. Unfortunately they cost twice as much. However with current pricing I would prefer to install a double sided 256MB module rather than 2 * 128MB which equate to roughly the same dollars, knowing this leaves more DIMM slots free for possible future upgrades.
I'd say this is probably your problem.
As an additional mention, I see SDR RAM getting more expensive, not cheaper. I expect 128MB modules to stop being manufactured very soon, and 256MB and 512MB modules perhaps later this year, since DDR is becoming very popular. So I would be doing any SDR upgrades now since later will hence become difficult.

pcpartner's mvp3pro mobo says 256mb max sdram, im running it on 512mb!!!
maybe VIA chipsets are better equipped for upgrades????
or is it the 2mbit bios that does it?
i got a feeling since this mobo supports 512mb sdram and a 40gig hdd by default pcpartner doesn't talk much about bios versions 'cuz this is a recently reincarnated bios via their patch.
