My AMI Bios v7 and windows xp do not recognize all my RAM

Is your memory not fully recognized? (Intel VX chipset Memory recognition)

specs

MSI MS-7032-02 K8T Neo-V AMD Athlon 64 Socket 754 Motherboard
Crucial 1gb RAM, pc3200 DDR, non-ecc (only ram chip installed)

the result is always the same - bios and windows recognizes it as 256mB

I'm getting the feeling it's a chipset density limitation, however - as stated by the specs for my mobo, it should be able to handle this chipset density

btw, it recognizes all of my old 512 pc3200 ddr ram chip
and when i combine it the 512 with the 1gb
the result is a whopping total of 256mB again

Do you have another board to test this memory stick in ?
-> probably a faulty stick

Do you have a somewhat recent Bios installed?
->Early Bios revisions often have problems with memory compatibility.

Does your memory stick have memory chips on both sides of the stick or only on one side ?

What's the Crucial part number of this stick?
-> Is the any chance that it's a buffered/registered stick?

Don't have another board at this time
how would i test, run memtest86.exe?

my bios is American Megatrends v7.00T

there are chips on both sides
Crucial part number is CT12864Z40B.K16TKY
the label on the stick itself says - 1 GB 184-PIN DIMM 128x64 DDR PC3200 UNBUFF

it uses Samsung chips

that means 64mB per chip, right

this is what it says on the msicomputer.com website for my mobo:
Note: PC3200 (DDR400) maximum 4 banks (2 double-sided) only

uh oh

listed as being compatible with your board. Contact Crucial with your findings. It should have worked, it doesn't, they guarantee working memory.

Please contact MSI at first and see what MSI say. I believe it would be a BIOS issue.

thanks RAF, ok, i just flashed my bios to a newer version, and i THINK that it sees the all the ram

however, my VIA USB chipset drivers are screwed up now, not allowing me to use my USB ports (so i can't type/use mouse in win xp)
i suppose i could get a ps2 adapter

Its weird, please see if there is a item in bios setup setting usb to disable, or you can try to enter bios setup and load default value.

By the way, I can provide a way and you can try...

1) Can your usb keyboard work during bios boot or bios setup?
2) Do you have a bootable disk booting to dos? if you have, please try to boot to dos with a usb keyboard and see if you can use the usb keyboard in DOS.

If your usb keyboard can work during bios boot and bios setup, even it can work in dos, I believe there is no problem in bios, maybe only a setting is wrong.

Good luck.

so my Bios and Windows XP now recognize all my 1.5 gig RAM =)

unfortunately - my keyboard + mouse (USB) don't work in winxp now (they do work in BIOS and if I boot WinXP safe)
furthermore my 22" monitor display went from 1680x1050 to 640x480, wth?

i believe this may be an incompatibility with Via chipset drivers I recently installed and my new bios (although these Via drivers worked with my old bios)

i am using the newest Hyperion drivers (for my mobo K8N) and the latest AMI bios for my mobo (aka ms-7032)
im going to try to downgrade to the VIa 4in1 drivers to see if it fixes the problem. It's weird though, b/c if my Via Chipset was not working, then how am I able to access my IDE HDs, and RAM?

this ever happen?

update: i disabled legacy USB in my bios

and wa-la! everything works now

weird tho, i had to resize my windows display back to 1680x1050
and had to rechoose my preferred wireless network connect

don't understand why certain things were reset, but now everything works, and BIOS/WIN XP/SISOFT SANDRA recognize my 1.5 gigs RAM

lawl, i think i spoke too soon

although my comp recognizes the new ram now, it freezes once every 5-15 minutes. Memtest86 didn't pick up any errors, but froze itself on Test #11!
