OK, so I bought the 250G drive. The board recognizes 136G of it and does not hang. Linux is indeed capable to access the full 250G with a 2.6.12 kernel. Then I got curious and put the drive into a machine running off a very old Pentium 1 motherboard. There I only had 136G and /var/log/messages showe...

debain has precompiled 2.6.8.2-i386 kernel packages, too. just apt-get them :) or build your own kernel which is way cooler though. yes, you are right. I forgot that I already had a custom kernel. And that I should not replace it because I need a custom compiled module for the AVM Fritz card. Have ...

no problem for linux. and if you don't even need to boot from those disks, you are all safe. Cool! I was just a little bit afraid because of the experience with the other computer. But... kernels since 2.4.19 support 48bit LBA but 2.6.x will be fine anyways. ... the other machine is running Debian ...

250GB with 04/08/2002-SiS-620-P6SEP-MEC-00 possible?
Hi, I run a Via Cyrix 600MHz CPU on a P6SEP-ME mobo as a 24/7 server. Here is the data I got from the boot screen. Award Modular Bios 4.51PG P6SEP-ME Ver 3.7b 04/08/2002 04/08/2002-SiS-620-P6SEP-MEC-00 I was wondering if the board can handle a 250GB HD. Is the 128GB limit a BIOS or a hardware issue ...

Normally CPU clock speed has little to do with RAM speed as long as the RAM is fast enough; the RAM speed rating shows the fastest clock you can expect to work but it will generally work with slower. Hi Nick, thank you for the insightful comments. Since my 133MHz module should have worked under all...

[3 boards, 3 types of RAM] detection and boot issues
Hi, the setting is as follows: three Slot1 motherboards (the further one gets down the list, the harder it is to get information on the board) a) MSI 6117 b) Gateway 4000206 c) Compaq 8915CCJ82038 from a Deskpro EP/SB with 350 MHz Pentium II three different types of SDRAM (identified with the help o...

Manual for Compaq board
Hi, I cannot find a manual for the board of a friend of mine. The board is from a Compaq Deskpro EP/SB with a 350 MHz Pentium II. A Compaq tool identifies it as a 8915CCJ82038. Google has zero hits for that string and the Compaq/HP homepage is just a mess. Anybody know of a place where to get a manu...

did you try an ISA multi I/O or diskette controller to see if it will read a diskette ? Not yet. In the current situation I'd rather not do anything before I understand what I am doing. Shorting pins 2 & 3 together should cause a checksum error, which should cause the BIOS "bootblock" to try to loa...

i440BX that will (probably) not work: - Abit BH-6 - Epox 3VHA - Gigabyte 6RX - MSI Pro266 Plus - MSI Pro266 Master These boards (except Abit BH-6) do have VIA Apollo Pro 266 chipset, not Intel 440BX. Most of the retail slot1 i440BX motherboards I have seen do have flash chips in DIL32 (or DIP32, wh...

Nearly all i440BX chipset based boards should have 2MBit Flashroms - Asus P2B as example . Thanks for the hint. The MSI 6117 has the i440LX chipset, so I'll look into that as well. So far I mostly got Abit BH-6 boards on Ebay while searching for i440BX. They will definitely not work since AFAICT th...

There's the recovery jumper - so try it. Hi, thanks for the hint. But the Gateway2000 board is working fine. It's the MSI board that I have trouble with. I only got the gateway board from some clueless guy on Ebay who sold it to me as being an MSI 6117. NickS has already posted that unfortunately t...

All mainboards using a 2MBit(256KByte) Flashrom should be suitable for a successful Hot-Flash Hi Dennis, thank you for the ultra-fast response. Can you (or anybody else) give me a hand on for example a search term to compile my short list with? "2mbit flashrom OR flash-rom 370" returns 0 results on...

MSI 6117 - List of Mobo suitable for hotflash
Hi, I have had some trouble after flashing the BIOS on my MSI 6117. In a post by ajzchips I have read that using the hot-flash technique is not limited to the same model mobo. So my question is how I can come up with a list of suitable mobos for hot-flashing my MSI 6117. It has a W29C020-90 BIOS chi...

Re: MSI 6117 - flash gone bad
3) Hot-Swap. I have already bought another 6117 on ebay but the guy did not have a clue that indeed he had a different board :? It is some Gateway2K board but I cannot find a BIOS chip anywhere on that thing :( OK, in the meantime I have found out that this board is a 4000206 from Gateway . Can any...
