Well, after having it in my PC, I simply put the HDD back in my friends PC. Not actually having done anything, except removed some viruses that were on the HDD (I don't think they were causing the problem) it now boots. Just one BIOS message: "SMART command failure". Then have to press F1. Could be ...

Not strictly BIOS but...

Not strictly a BIOS issue, but I have a hunch (hope) that actually doing an MBR fix may clear the problem. Because my friend is running WINDOWS Millenium, he cannot use a RECOVERY CONSOLE, but I can use FDISK/MBR. If I went and tried FDISK/MBR I would be okay wouldn't I? There is only 1 partition on...

When a HDD is not recognised by BIOS

A friends HDD may have a problem with MBR. However, after a computer freeze his PC would not boot up. After that, although BIOS is set to AUTO, His PC is not even recognizing the HDD now. (And curiously the BIOS seems so slow in acting). Anyway, on my PC, his HDD is recognised by WINDOWS when I'm no...

What BIOS do I have?

According to my PC handbook it says, "MSI system BIOS with AMI core". Indeed, when I run utilities it's reported that system BIOS is MSI ver 1.6, and when I enter the BIOS setup prior to boot up I read, "AMIBIOS Easy setup Utilities Ver 1.16".Thing is what BIOS do I have? Do I have AMI BIOS or MSI B...

Same BIOS

I never changed the BIOS at all. I'm running MSI system BIOS ver 1.60, with AMI "core" AMIBIOS Easy Setup Utilities ver 1.16. Both from 1998. I do wonder whether the HDD setup disk altered something. I was surprised that my PC can handle an 80Mb given it's 1998 vintage.

Well, I installed the 80Gb drive and seems to work.

Got eager to install so I did. PC reports the 80Gb drive as 80Gb. Probably then my BIOS okay. I thought I'd have problems.

What really is my mobo manufacturer?

Hi. BIOS Type: American Megatrends BIOS ID: 61-1218-001169-00111111-071595-440BX-1440B000 OEM Sign-On: A6119P2 V1.65 121898 Now, before I discovered about BIOS strings I identified my board as MSI-6119 (Micro-Star International 6119). If we consider the BIOS string, I reckon, if you ignore the two p...
