Minor note here: the drawings are by Sharedoc, I just posted/hosted them for him.

Re: 600X

The system is 2645-5FG, 500MHz P III M You don't have a PIII M, but a regular old PIII "mobile" in an "MMC-2" form factor. A Pentium "M" is a different thing. The max processor is a PIII 850MHz in an MMC-2 form factor., which is the fastest that Intel made in that form factor. It is a straight swap...

Re: Thanks to all

1. For the moment, I'm running only Win2K with L2 cache enabled through the PowerLeap Cache Config Tool mentioned by Holgi128 on page 12 of the string (cacheutility.zip) . I couldn't get the PoweLeap CPU Control Panel to install, it kept giving "An error occurred during the move data process". I've...

No. The PIII has a 100MHz FSB, so no mod is required. Maybe you are looking at your original PII which runs at 66MHz? Most of this thread concentrates on installing and modding a new PIII CPU, not working with your original PII.

I don't know Linux yet, so I don't know if this will be any help, but here's a link to someone else's L2 cache enabler for Linux:
Activating the L2 data cache of Pentium III in Thinkpads 600

I've never used it, have no idea if it works, all I did was bookmark it.

[...]but I'm not sure what he means by byte 2B. I see the 12345, etc. and letters at the top, and 0, 10, 20, 30, etc. on the left. Hopefully I won't even have to disable it, but I think I'd better know how to just in case. For reference purposes, and for future readers of this thread, Byte 20 is lo...

Trillium wrote: [...] that he had been able to write 390X bios into a 390E (after a mod) Wait a second, from what I can tell reading the thread, Trillium is unable to boot into Windows 98SE with the 390X BIOS installed on a 390E. Do we know how much difference there is between 600E and 600X? Lots! ...

Ok, so I should change 00 to 08 instead of changing 00 to 0A, right? That's my recommendation, yes. You are then changing the value from 0000000 (binary) to 0001000 (binary), and you are only changing the single, specific bit that affects the L2 cache. I understand that Powerleap has been used to e...

Some 600E and 770X machines apparently shipped with a BIOS setting of "00" at byte 20 instead of "02". This means that for some reason there are 600/770 machines that have a particular bit turned on by default and other 600/770 machines don't. I don't know what that particular bit controls or why so...

Added later: Even better, than the notes I've written below, I'd recommend consulting "burmygreens" page describing Overclocking a TP770X . He has great closeups of the 770X board and I think for overclocking purposes, the 770X and 770Z can be treated as identical. Maybe this is the page you tried t...

beatoem: Thank you so much for the information about changing the processor driver in order to deal with problems reaching full speed on a 600X with SpeedStep CPU running XP. Your suggested solution solved my problem in my 600X running a PIII 850MHz under XP SP2. Having said that, I would note that ...

I'm no wizard with this BIOS stuff, but I'll take a crack at your questions. Hello I have a IBM 770 laptop really can't get to the bios Tried F1 while powering on I get a small powder blue window with a white border and a bird as the mouse cursor. I think that IS the BIOS. What you're seeing is Easy...

OMIGAWD! You cannot believe how much you ROCK! I couldn't wait for all the normal safety precautions that anyone with a brain would have made before making the edit, so I just went ahead and did it as you described. The 770Z Boots clean! Haven't tested everything yet, but I think THAT is EXACTLY wha...
