An update on the USB development; If you surge the USB port, your thinkpad will immediately turn off. It will take several tries to get it to turn back on again, and when it finally does, you'll notice the battery probably wont charge past a certain amount. It appears that the surge causes the micro...

Ahh, apologies, my misunderstanding. Just a thought regarding the 256k cache; My pad, before I wiped out the board ( as should be gratingly apparent since I mention it every post ), always booted up with 256k cache enabled. I only noticed this being out of the ordinary once I read this thread. It al...

Hjulian,

I believe (iirc) it's on the third row down of the first column, but I can't be 100% sure because my thinkpad is in bits, so I have no way to check :D

Close, but not quite! :) I do have some good news though! I have successfully located the Docking Port USB controller. It's the Intel FW82371EB chip, motherboard underside, just off the processor pins and docking pins. Initially I was afraid that the Docking station would have it's own, seperate con...

Have you people thought of wiring a USB 2.0 PCMCIA card directly into the PCMCIA bus? Surprisingly, yes. I eventually opted towards using a method involving a mini 4 port usb hub. With the correct modifications, it fits snuggly under the left palmrest bezel. Worst comes to worst, there's nothing to...

Thanks for the reply, Chris. I've dropped a message to someone on Ebay with one (n600c). If they ship to Canada, I'll be joining you in the land of heatsink mods. With this in mind, I might/should be able to push my 850 (assuming it still works) over the 1ghz mark. I assume that the 600c is slightly...

Chris - I'd be very interested in doing this myself - where'd you get that one from? I only found one on ebay, and that was US Only, Money order. I'm in canada, so that's a problem! I noticed that you appear to have dremel'd part of the chassis - Do you think cutting the far end of the radiator off ...

Chris - How far does the radiator extrude? Surely this must get moderately hot after a while, or is it just that good at cooling? :) Wouldn't fancy catching the side of my hand on something like that if it's hot. Is there any real difference in height between the new sink and the old 600e version? A...

I know this is a long shot, but I don't suppse anyone knows the location of the USB Controller chip on the 600e system board? Finding this would be very helpful in my efforts to add the second USB port. I'm thinking it might fit nicely where the External Floppy/Drive port is (I personally have never...

I got super lucky and found a 2645-8BU board on ebay for $35 :D
Will post my experiences with the 850 chip when the board arrives.

Ah hah. I also noticed the board, when plugged in, makes an almost too-high-frequency-to-hear whistle, going from high pitch to a lower inaudible pitch. It goes "WWWWWWWWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE EEEEE EEEEEEEOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU" ...

Thanks for the prompt reply, Sharedoc I had another play around with the board last night, and after finally removing the 850 CPU (one of the screw tops has been mangled... which is odd, since I didn't do that. And I know the cats don't have opposable thumbs so...), I stuck the old 400 back in. The ...

First of all, thanks to everyone on this board. You've inspired me in so many ways with the ideas that we can modify and upgade our laptops. How sharedoc figured this out in the first place is absolutely beyond me, but I digress. I've been making some modifications to my pad. Infact I've contructed ...
