BIOSes on some boards have bad bootblock (maybe a bug) that can't boot from floppy (because it does not initialize floppy controller properly) and is in fact useless. This can be your case - if you have ISA slot, try ISA floppy disk controller.

I think that the final solution is to buy new computer, this time non-IBM (and also non-Compaq).

Try reinstalling windows from regular CD, not the IBM recovery CD. I tried once to use the recovery CD on IBM ThinkPad 770X notebook, but it failed after a while - simply crashed. Then I installed Windows 98 from original Microsoft CD and everything went fine... If this does not help, try updating t...

Don't do that - better buy new board. Many people have problems with Unicore BIOSes and they're VERY expensive.

The difference is in the CPU pinout - celerons upto 533MHz are PPGA, while 533A and over are FC-PGA. Some PPGA boards can be modified to support FC-PGA CPUs (because some pin meanings were changed on purpose by Intel).

Looks like PC Chips board (maybe M747) - identify it at PC Chips Lottery http://go.to/th2 (in the "DON'T KNOW" section) and you will find links to BIOS and onboard component manufacturers there.

Wintac/Edom W6LXB board. I can't find any BIOS for this board...
Use drive overlay software from HDD manufacturer or add-on PCI EIDE controller with own BIOS for HDDs over 32GB.

If it does not do anything, there is no other solution.

read http://rainbow.ht.st/hardware/hotflash.html for more info

triple check chip orientation before inserting in the socket (the half-circle key on the chip must match the key on the socket)

Yes, I'm Rainbow Software :)
AmiFlash that's on my website works well with W29C020 (http://rainbow.ht.st/hardware/hotflash.html). Use the latest version of UniFlash - older versions had no time-outs in Winbond flashing routines, resulting in hang when block protection was enabled on the chip.

If you get CMOS checksum error, replace the battery.
If you get BIOS checksum error and Award BootBlock BIOS, you need to boot from floppy and reflash the BIOS.
