http://www.medion.com/au/ Drivers and updates (Click More) Full Text Search for "MD5000" Then you have two BIOS updates, the same date, the second one appearing to be newer, both addressing "ATA Security Freeze" issues. Try that BIOS. Maybe this BIOS image is addressing issues that the images you re...

This is strange - I cannot find the 6701 on MSI's Global or Australia (same site) websites.

You would think that such a recent board would be easy to locate on the manufacturer's website and checkout.

Check the floppy setting in the BIOS.

Am interested to hear the result of the Windows XP installation on the BIOS that is supposed to be good for XP (although I don't believe in O/S specific BIOSs).

If you post your BIOS String and BIOS Message someone may be able to verify your board ID for you.

Are you sure your board is what you think it is?

In your initial post you were not 100% confident on the brand and model.

If you have a BIOS and board mismatch this would explain why the new BIOS is not working.

I am not familiar with the specifications of your board but it sounds like the board is incompatible with the new CPU - with new boards you can normally change processors without changing board settings. Two things to check though: 1) Sometimes there is a jumper that needs to be changed so that the ...

Also when trying a larger HDD ensure that any capacity limiting jumpers are not set.

Well the obvious difference as already pointed out is the absent COAST slot, although it looks like the board still has the wiring to mount one on. Given that COAST slots were used on earlier boards, it could mean that this board is slightly newer than the one pictured by Kuriaki and that the slot h...

I second the suggestion for a power supply. I have personally not seen a lot of power supply problems, but did observe once an AT power supply causing the serial mouse not to work.

And definitely check the board for bulging capacitors - this is a good suggestion by LoneWolf.

To be clear, have you followed these steps? 1) Update to latest BIOS as advised by Kuriaki. 2) Load BIOS defaults and make sure PS/2 ports for KB and mouse are enabled in BIOS. 3) Backed up any data required of hard disk, then formatted hard disk. 4) Peformed fresh installation of 98SE. Make sure wh...

Sounds to me either like the battery is not making a powered connection to the board (on one 486 system I saw two wires that had come off contacts from the board) or the CMOS chip is faulty and not holding it's settings.

Yep I agree with the BIOS issue - based on date you would expect similar or better stability - not as a rule though but as a guideline (may not always be the case).

Sounds good - When it arrives I would swap it into the machine, then try a clean install with a format.

But don't lose sight of the bigger picture - it may not be the video card - so don't be too dissapointed or spend too much time with the video issue if it does not work.

Considering that there can be several different versions of the board, could replacing a 686A with a 686B introduce the problem that sometimes occurrs where incomptatible UDMA modes are chosen by the BIOS?
