If you go to http://www.giga-byte.com/MotherBoard/Products/Products_GA-6VXC7-4X.htm then this will bring up the specs for the motherboard on Gigabyte's web site. Double check that this is indeed your mainboard and then there is a BIOS link where you can download the latest BIOS for this board (only ...

PCI Steering
This is only partially a BIOS question, but I have a book that describes how with Windows 95 (Before OSR2) the BIOS was responsible for the PCI Steering (assigning IRQs to devices) and that Windows just accepted the values from the BIOS, and that this method was occassionally subject to resource con...

So if I understand correctly, the CPU microcode is only a part of the BIOS that allows it to correctly initialise new CPUs, and when you refer to loading the microcode update this is simply the process of correctly initialising the CPU? And the CPU microcode has nothing to do with the code in the CP...

A BIOS upgrade MAY offer 80GB; but as a matter of fact, I think, probably not. With that chipset, depending on the manufacturer and how much they put into the BIOS upgrades they make available, you might get to 80GB but if you do I am sure you will be pushing it. I recently installed a 40GB drive on...

Update CPU Microcode
Hi Not sure whether this was the prefereable section to place this topic, but On Gigabyte's website, I noticed that BIOS updates for some boards I use, such as the Slot 1 686BX and 686BXE boards, include a note in the updates saying Update CPU Microcode. What does this refer to? It sounds like updat...

I would try/consider the following: Assuming the flash program is a Windows program, try a DOS flasher if available. You might get better access to the device under DOS. What brand and chipset is your modem. Try a generic driver if you were currently using the manufacturer's driver or vice-versa. Fo...

You seem to be reluctant to use the QC617 BIOS because of no documentation and rightly so. I once had a problem that upgrading a BIOS kept on introducing a unknown device, while reverting back to the original resolved the problem. Eventually when I tried downloading the BIOS just previous to the lat...

Hi Jen I am surprised no-one mentioned this, unless I missed something, but since the floppy drive works in one PC but not another this often suggests that the ribbon cable is misaligned with the pins or rotated 180deg at one end. Ie: Red line on cable, which is pin 1, should align with pin 1 on the...

On your original problem, I was thinking maybe you were exceeding the number of rows of memory permitted. Rows is different to slots. Each single side of memory equals one row. So if you installed two double sided modules for example, you would have had four rows of memory installed. Now I noticed y...

Just a few questions about SDRAM after reading the FAQ. (I am interested in memory at the moment, so I read it, even if no-else will). What is the 16Mx8 and 32Mx4 organisation? I don't understand this. I understand as far as 8 chip being single sided and 16 chip being double sided, and that, for exa...

I find random reboots seem to be often due to a problem (probable fault) with the main board or memory. Or perhaps the video card also. Check that your cards, memory and CPU are seated correctly and are making a clean connection. Also, are your BIOS settings near the defaults (not sure if any weird ...
