Hi Phil I thought I posted a response last night but cannot see it here so am unsure what happened to it. Basically I was saying that I suspected that some component, probably the main board, had been damaged during the transfer, as this seems very unusual behavior. However, you could enter into the...

I am not sure if a BIOS would contain hidden information or settings, but I'm not sure if you are aware that sometimes enabling a setting opens up another group of settings, previously not visible, that are related to what you enabled, so in this sense these can appear hidden.

Hope this helps.

I sometimes come across ISA devices like SB cards redetecting - I think in some circumstances without a BIOS change. Seems to occur because some other device Windows knows about has been added/removed or changed resources. As if a conflict has been resolved but as far as I can tell there are no conf...

There is one further thing I can think of but it is risky. I am aware of this technique for mb BIOS and see no reason why it cannot be applied to VGA BIOS. You would find an identical card to the one with the corrupt BIOS. Then remove the BIOS chip from the good card and put it onto the card with th...

Bernado Just noticed you specified 128MB maximum RAM. I would be quite surprised if the board does not take more than that. Do not know the brand of your board but I know someone using the Intel AL440LX board with 196MB RAM (A 128MB chip and I think a 64MB or two * 32MB) and I am confident this boar...

Hi Nork, What I put in my response is what I have found to be the bare minimum boot disk to flash a BIOS, which as you will note is the bare minimum plus enabling the HIMEM.SYS memory manager. As you know, a normal DOS or Windows format creates a completely blank disk; a DOS or Windows format to mak...

What I would do is the following: Format a system disk under Windows 9x. In CONFIG.SYS, in the root directory of the floppy, put: DEVICE=A:\HIMEM.SYS DOS=HIGH,UMB You do not need an AUTOEXEC.BAT file for my method. The format program will probably not put HIMEM.SYS on the floppy. I think it can be l...

Question - I was looking at the INTEGRATED PERIPHERALS section for this particular (AWARD) BIOS and noticed that where it has the PRIMARY and SECONDARY controller options for enable and disable, it also has a third option for a PCI SLOT 2ND IDE channel, enable or disable. I don't think I would have ...

Under many circumstances I prefer to use a boot disk with minimal configuration from config.sys and autoexec.bat, including flashes. However I have found, especially with the later versions of AWARD FLASH, to allocate the memory it requires, that it is best to load HIMEM.SYS and NOT EMM386.EXE, and ...

The board is a PC Partner 520NH, Socket 7, VX chipset. Although the board still runs fine, I think the BIOS handles the CD-ROM differently after the flash as I need real mode drivers in AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS to get the CD-ROM to appear in Windows - otherwise the sec. controller is disabled. Al...

Hi - I'm new to this message board. I posted this topic on a different message board and someone suggested I look on this message board for the answer. I have read the rules, checked the FAQ and collected wisdom, and have scanned some other topics on this message board and could not find an answer. ...
