They claim here that v7.75 is the first version of awdflash that supports SST 49LF004A. And this is also the first version that supports BIOS Lock feature. Really bad luck :(

Tried the 12V trick yesterday. Worked fine :)
The exact marking of the chip was:
W49F002UP12B
212542901
132OHSA
(i.e. IC revision H, manufactured in 2001, week 32)

Thanks, Rainbow!
The weird thing about this chip is that in earlier revisions of the datasheet (found rev. A2 here) this 12V trick is described.

Boot block lockout

I have a Winbond W49F002U flash chip (from a dead MSI board) with locked boot block (addresses 3C000 and up cannot be erased - tried with my c't flasher). Does anyone know how to disable this feature? TIA (hopefully my post won't be deleted this time... What would be the right section for questions ...

I think I will try to replace the BIOS with the FIC AZ31 one (and then report the results here; and if I fail, I have a good opportunity to improve my soldering skills :) ).

Bought the same board recently (it was really cheap :) ). I read in some kind of forum (don't remember, where), that it's not possible to replace the BIOS. If it hadn't a soldered BIOS chip, I would would verify it myself. Maybe wcpredit will allow you to change settings that Compaq doesn't want you...

I meant something like power failure during flashing, wrong BIOS image flashed, virus etc , e.g. the computer won't boot at all.

Actually I meant PLCC chips (sorry, forgot to mention it). I have heard, that somebody soldered wires to the chip (actually not less work than de-soldering the chip) and flashed it that way. But maybe this was just BS. Any idea why it can't be flashed on-board?

Soldered BIOS chip

Is de-soldering and then flashing the only option to fix a messed-up BIOS chip that is soldered on the motherboard (assuming that it doesn't have any recovery options like boot-block BIOS)? Or is it possible to flash it somehow on-board with external flasher?

TIA
