I guess you can flash back the Award image up to the boot block start address. At least I have done that successfully. The programmer will of course give you an error but it doesn't matter.
Another option (?):
Take a look at the Uniflash documentation and see what's written about W29C020 there.

Crashes at a very early stage of boot-up... What processor(s) did you use for testing? Was the FSB frequency jumper set correctly? If yes, then most likely the northbridge is fried (although I have also seen a few boards which crashed at C0 because of a bad flash chip (or the contents of the flash c...

Downloadable BIOS images are just binary images of the contents of the flash chip. At least for AMI and Award BIOS. What external programmer did you use for programming the flash chip? The POST card just displays 00 (or 88)?

At least with some old IDE controllers 48-bit LBA would only work in PIO modes (problems with transferring "long" addresses in UDMA modes). And you can always use an add-in PCI IDE controller if you want to have a 250-GB disk in a Pentium machine ;) And actually there are plans to add 48-bit LBA sup...

Hei

Looks like the MRBIOS (you downloaded it from here, right?) is meant for boards with another super I/O chip (I assume you already tried to clear CMOS etc). To flash back the original BIOS you can try the boot block recovery procedure.

IMHO Winbond flash chips are OK. Only see one that's acting weird thus far.

crippled memory interface on VIA P3-chipsets up to 693A . Don't know about the IDE performance (I guess LX has slightly better one), but on 693A tests show doubled (BX-level) memory performance when certain tweaks are applied. Might also work with older VIA northbridges... There's also 100 MHz FSB ...

No, its not. But AFAIK shorting address pins does not work with LPC flash chips (Winbond W39V040 is a LPC flash chip).

Most of the retail slot1 i440BX motherboards I have seen do have flash chips in DIL32 (or DIP32, wh...

Although pin 1 (which is VPP (+12V) for MX28F1000) is marked as NC in the 29EE010 datasheet I guess it would be wise to bend it so that it won't touch the socket (this also applies to pin 30). Another issue is whether there are flash routines for 29EE010 in the SY-5ED BIOS. If there aren't, you will...
