So sounds like you installed fresh 98 before you upgraded and reset the BIOS.

Therefore may be a good idea to back up any data required and do another fresh install.

Does this mean that if we recover the BIOS from bootblock and set the board up with a better power supply that we should be OK?

The link Kuriaki posted mentions fixes related to the PS/2 mouse, so since you have flashed the latest version you should be OK now according to this. Did you install Windows fresh after you updated the BIOS and loaded defaults or before? If before another clean install may still help. One test I li...

In Windows 2000, and probably also XP, you can install with APM support by pressing (I think) F7 when setup starts.

If the problem is simply that you cannot install because you do not have ACPI support, you may be able to do something similar to install with APM support.

Worth recovering from bootblock?

A couple of years back a Slot 1 board went into bootblock for no apparent reason. We reflashed the board from bootblock and then it worked fine up until last year when it failed completely. Now a different board has also went into bootblock, again for no apparent reason. The question is: "Based on t...

Hi Denniss Thanks for your reply and link. I have bookmarked it. Just before I recieved your reply notification I taken a closer look at both boards. When I followed the link the jumpers section confirmed what I just found out and now I can confidently install a different CPU on this board. There is...

Hi KachiWachi

Thanks for your reply.

What I am unsure of though and trying to find out is:

Do I adjust the CPU voltage manually on these boards with jumpers or do these boards auto detect the CPU voltage?

CPU Voltage Adjustment

Thanks to the BIOS Numbers pages in Wim's BIOS, I have identified two boards: Amtron PM-8800A VX PCI OR ASeagate VX (AWARD BIOS) and PC Chips M571 (AMI BIOS) Interestingly, the first board came up as manufacturer Tyan in the manufacturer's table. I do not require a BIOS upgrade, but am looking for s...

Perhaps what you are reading as '700' in the BIOS is only part of the description string the BIOS reads off the CPU. If this is the case, the actual speed that the BIOS reports the CPU to be running at is a different thing and could be a different figure. Have a close look through your BIOS post scr...

I would be tempted to believe the BIOS as to what speed the CPU is running at. Maybe others can offer opinions on this point. From what I am told software that detects and monitors CPU speeds, temperatures and fan speeds - are not always accurate. Personally I think the BIOS is more accurate as to w...

If you are sure you have a BIOS image match for your exact board and model I would migrate to Uniflash. But be sure to watch the flash process carefully and make a backup first. If the flash or verify gives errors then DO NOT REBOOT and flash the backup and then reboot. Then you have to figure out w...

Sometimes in this case you just have to experiment with the keys during boot until you get in, or manage to generate a BIOS error that gives you a prompt with an option to press a key to get into BIOS setup.
