Who is PNY - Are they a manufacturer of good quality memory? I have had a lot of problems with cheap brand memory. I normally now try to stick to Kingston and Hynix (formerly Hyundai). However, if you are having the same problems it may not be memory - I thought something might have changed if it was.

If the floppy drive light is always on this ussually means you have the cable the wrong way around on either the main board or floppy drive connector. I have even seen floppy drives (or at least one) where pin 1 is marked at the incorrect end of the connector. Also check that there are not any bent ...

I don't know if that could still be a BIOS problem, but I hear a lot of Western Digital HDD have problems, although I stick to them myself. Have you got another similar size, known good working HDD you can try, to see if there are problems just with large capacity disks like this or even just with W...

If the manufacturer and model that you given was printed on your main board and you are sure that it is a DFI AK75-EC board then this model is listed at the bottom of this page: http://www.dfi.com/product/productlist.asp which Soupy already pointed you to. This page is part of DFI, the manufacturer'...

ATA33, ATA66, ATA100, ATA133

Can a BIOS upgrade add ATA support, from ATA33 and up? I appreciate that an ATA33 board can probably not be BIOS upgraded beyond ATA33 as from memory the pinout on ATA33 prevents ATA66/100/133 cables from being attached. However, once having an ATA66 or better board, can a BIOS upgrade upgrade suppo...

I think the boot menu information is found in BOOT.INI, CONFIG.SYS and/or AUTOEXEC.BAT. If you find it in BOOT.INI, I do not think that file is required for a non-multi-boot system under Win9x, so you SHOULD be able to safely delete the file, but do not quote me on that. Wait until you get a second ...

Hi AJZ - Yes I did read both Edwin's and Nick's responses before posting my essay! What I understood from their responses was that ITE was a type of Super I/O chip. However I also remembered the BIOS upgrade offering me a choice between Super I/O and ITE and this was what was confusing me - I though...

I am thinking of reflashing again with the correct flash now that I know to follow the information on the BIOS screen rather than on the chips. Although last time I probably used the correct flash by default as I do not remember the two binary file options available when I last downloaded and flashe...

I heard through a friend that Gigabyte boards had a lot of problems at one stage related to BIOS updates, and that basically after an update the board would be dead as you are describing. However from what he said this was generally a problem with updates that came on the CD shipped with Gigabyte bo...

I sometimes have had this problem - seems to be that some flash program versions are thinking that there is a mismatch between the system and the BIOS you wish to flash (whether this is actual or not) and then preventing the flash. The latest version of the flash program that can flash both AMI/AWAR...

ITE or Super I/O - How to know what to use

I have noticed that BIOS upgrades for some boards, such as the PC Partner Socket 7 MVP3 878DS board, have a choice or image file to flash when downloading the BIOS update - in this case ITE or Super IO upgrade. In such cases, can you flash either version, and in this case, what is better to use? If ...

The board on the website certainly looked like a match to the model you gave but I wanted to to double check it yourself just so that you were satisfied as well and not just taking my word from it; gathering from your reply it sounds like you did this? How did you go wrong when you did the flash - a...

I'd say the problem is still BIOS power related, which could still mean the battery. I once had a system with a good batter but the clip that held the battery in was bent so the battery was not making proper contact. Have also had a few similar problems to this. So what might want to take another lo...
