Not sure about that. I'd try:

the latest Via 4in1 drivers from www.viaarena.com ?
later nvidia drivers (depending on what you have loaded now).
making sure the video card is not sharing an IRQ with any other peripheral.

You should be able to run a K6-x/K6-x+ CPU from 400 to 500 MHz. I am curently running a K6-3+450 at 500.
