Don't stress yourself too much about it. With a system using SDRAM, and a 9200SE, it's pretty much a moot point; AGP 2X is more than ample.

Heh, on a VX chipset motherboard, consider yourself lucky that it supports 127, let alone 160GB. I'd be surprised if it really works past 8.4GB.

The CompUSA tech is either an idiot, or a liar, or both.

Re: Access to Compaq Presario 5528

I've searched through pages of forum posting and haven't had much luck. I'm trying to install Linux on an old Presaio 5528 (a combined computer & monitor with a whopping 24MB of RAM!!). I want to boot from CD to do the install. I get no splash screen and have tried the F1, F10, INS, Alt + F1/F10 to...

At a guess, I'd say that the update either enabled or disabled ACPI. Windows will not boot if you change this setting after installation.

Check your cmos setup and restore ACPI to its previous state.

Looks like an FIC board. Is it in a brand name system? (Compaq, HP)

You're going to have to determine the PCB revision to get the proper update. Open the case, and look on the board. Somewhere should be written 1.2, 1.3. 1.3A or 2.0

I'd start by resetting everything in BIOS to defaults; FSB, voltages, RAM speed and timings, etc etc.

Are the chips exactly the same kind?

Anyone find it odd that a Granite Bay chipset board has a Brookdale-G tag in the BIOS id string?

Anyhow, run BIOS Agent and post results.

I highly doubt you will find a way to make it work. Since it's a PIII, I'm assuming firewire support is through a PCI card, and therefore not seen in BIOS. About your only chance would be if the motherboard had built-in firewire and could be selected as a boot device in BIOS.

Sorry about what I posted if it was misleading - I should perhaps have been clearer in what I said as AJZCHIPS pointed out that while manufacturers would be more likely to make a BIOS update, perhaps from scratch, the WIMSBIOS team patches existing BIOS images and DO NOT make them from scratch as m...
