Yeah the card dell sells is just a dumb card that adds an output to the onboard video. It doesn't actually have any video guts itself.

USB Boot support

Anyone ever figured out how to slip in USB Boot support with CBROM for old motherboards?

I'm thinking along the lines of resurrecting old computers and have nothing in them but a thumb drive to boot a mini-os.

You need the special PCI Express card that Dell sells that lets you use dual monitors (One on VGA and one on DVI). We order all of our dells that way. You can get them off ebay for pretty cheap as well. The card looks like this: http://compeve.com/images/Silicon_add2.jpg Alternately... On my Optiple...

XP officially doesn't support Pentiums. Only K6's and Pentium II's.

Modifying Dell laptop bios for another video card.

This was something I tried to figure out a few years ago. I have a Dell Inspiron 4100 which has a Radeon M6 (7000) card in it. The Inspiron 4150 has a Radeon 7500 card in it. I bought the 7500 card off ebay and put it in my laptop but it booted with no video. Dell embeds the video bios inside the ma...

I never was able to get it to work in a smaller socket, the pins appear to be added to both ends so an adaptor would have to be made to line up the address lines.

Bios didn't "take" until clearing cmos

I used applerom's utilties on a Shuttle HOT-603 board and never noticed that the BIOS date was still old 1998. Then I had accidentally changed a setting that kept it from booting. So I cleared the CMOS and when it came back up. It now had the rom.by text and now listed 2002 on the bottom. Strange......

Many high end audio cards for professional use do not work correctly if they have to share an IRQ with another device via ACPI. They will produce audio anomalies, pops, clicks, static, background noise.

I ended up hotflashing the normal 1014s.003 bios. Just strange as I've had so much success with applerom's utilities before.

P2b-S + bp4rc_f + uniflash = dead w/ flashing kb lights

I had thought I had already flashed this board. But the date was 1998 so I downloaded the 1014s.003 bios and patched it and flashed it w/ bootblock. Now the system comes on with all 3 keyboard lights flashing on and off w/ no display. I've used the above combo before on many other boards with no iss...

I've seen a lot of failures related to windows based flashers in the Dell Laptop forums at the dell website. Either use a floppy or don't do it.

Interesting considering that I have been using an M726 for flashing. The other link posted I have read before, but my purpose was something that didn't require making a pcboard.
