Well I need some help plz. I flashed the new bios, it worked fine till I tried to do system recovery. My computer is a hp and this a compaq bios. Now when windows tries to start it say system config error and won't let windows start. I need someone to tell me how to make a bootable cd-rom so I can reflash the old bios back. Please help!

This would mean reverting to the 3.13 bios. I think there are instructions on how to make a bootable CD with bflash and the .bin file elsewhere in this thread.
edwin/evasive

I couldn't find what you were talking about edwin, maybe you could point me in the right direction or give me some step by step instructions? I also think you should warn people who have a hp computer about using this bios since it screws up system recovery....
I posted in this thread a couple times a few months ago, thanks again for the bios edwin.
I am extremely dissappointed with this motherboard. Reflashing the bios did help with system performance, but i was still having some problems with the secondary ide. I sent the machine to compaq and had them replace the mobo (i was under warranty, so it was a freebie). With the replacement i was once again able to burn dvd's at 16x with both of my dvd burners. now the hp drive that came with the machine is locked at 4x, and my aopen at 8x.
I did some more reading, and it turns out that after a consecutive amount of errors from a device windows xp (sp 2) will step down the transfer mode, eventually all the way down to pio. My drives went from ultra dma 2(hp drive) and ultra dma 4 (aopen) down to pio. I couldn't even watch a dvd with them. I was able to select 4x as a burn speed, but it went at .5-.7x. It took almost an hour and a half to burn a full disk. Whenever the drive was being accessed, the cpu usage would shoot up to 100% and everything would lock up. Of course i couldn't do anything else with the pc, so i got up. I would look over at it though, and as soon the the drive light would come on, my screen saver would freeze. There is a setting in the registry to re-enable dma modes, so i did that, i can now at least watch a dvd in real time. Still can't burn at full speed on either drive.
I've updated the firmware on both dvd drives.
From what I've read in this thread, the versions of the bios seem to be for a different south bridge setup. Neither one of them seem to do the job for me though.
I'm going to end up buying a cheap mobo to replace it, and it will probably out perform this trash.
Does anyone have any suggestions for me?

make sure that bios settings for ide modes are set to AUTO for all drives. if this doesn't help: get the drivers for the chipset from its manufacturer (i guess that would be AMD/ATI in this case) and reinstall them. if this still doesn't help: get a standalone windows version and make a clean install (no oem version, no preinstalled drivers, etc). first thing after the installation: install the chipset drivers from the manufacturer of the chipset. don't use any installation cd that came with the machine.

Here goes:
I am a computer moron, but always greatly overestimate my abilities. I had a problem with my Road Runner, their guy came out, told my husband computer had a bad network card. Promptly upon returning home, I opened the computer to pull out the network card and couldn't find it. Didn't think I was that big of a moron, but eventually figured out it was integral to the board. Screwed up several other things due to stupidity (like detached the CPU fan, but pulled CPU out with it because they had one of those crappy heat sink pads in between...)Finally got all of that fixed, bought some better heat sink paste at Radio Shack, got it all back together, put in an additional network card...Did a restore to a time when I new the original network card was working, and voila, original network card worked again. Pulled out new network card. During this process, during boot, I would get a message that my bios needed updated and to visit the website to download. Being obedient, I promptly did this and this is my reward for compliance:
(Compaq presario sr1834nx with same specs listed on posts of people earlier in forum. Bios chip marked 3.14)
The computer gets to the Press F1 to enter setup...PressF10 to ... and wont go any further. It will not recognize any keyboard strokes.
I contacted Compaq/HP tech service (online chat) and felt like I was in a bad cartoon or stand up comedy routine. I start off telling him I followed all online self-help steps from website blah blah blah and that my keyboard isn't recognized. He takes me through a thrilling process of "ok reboot the computer, then press f1 several times" I do it and say it doesn't recognize my keyboard. He then says "ok reboot the computer then press f10". What a nightmare.
So I ask you... can my computer possibly be salvaged? I don't have an installed floppy, but I have an old one I may be able to plug in somewhere. Any hope? Seems like this forum is the only place with answers on this piece of junk!

Thank you for the advice. I had already tried all of the above, EXCEPT reinstall the chipset drivers. So I gave that a try. I went ahead and downloaded the ati catalyst driver suite (it includes display + southbridge). Upon restarting my computer, windows would no longer load successfully. I went through safe mode and uninstalled, then rebooted and reinstalled. That got windows to load again. My drives are now detected as being capable of burning at 16x, but it still won't let me! Nero was letting burn at 16x originally, but I guess it's time (or past time) for me to experiment with different burning software.cp wrote:make sure that bios settings for ide modes are set to AUTO for all drives. if this doesn't help: get the drivers for the chipset from its manufacturer (i guess that would be AMD/ATI in this case) and reinstall them. if this still doesn't help: get a standalone windows version and make a clean install (no oem version, no preinstalled drivers, etc). first thing after the installation: install the chipset drivers from the manufacturer of the chipset. don't use any installation cd that came with the machine.

Have sent you a PM; would like the 3.14 bios as well.
I hope it doesn't sound too awful to say that I'm glad I'm not the only one having problems. I thought it was just me.

Does anyone else who has this motherboard have all the ide connections in use? or at least 2 devices on the secondary? if so, I'd like to know if you are having any problems.
I guess I am on the wrong message board for this type of support, thanks for putting up with me so far
