My CD-ROM does not work

Hi!

My CD-ROM is not working. I checked under Device Manager under Hard Disk Controllers and there was a yellow exclamation mark beside the Primary and Secondary Controllers. So I replaced a new cd-rom and found out that it is still not working. I have done everything I think is possible but none of them seemed to work.

Is there a better way to make my CD-ROM work?

Please help!

Thank you very much!

When you unplug the CDROM, do the exclamation marks disappear?

No, it does not. It just remains as it is.

What motherboard do you have?

Have you tried removing the hideous entries from the Device Manager and reboot to have Windows redetect/reinstall them?

I am not quite sure what type of motherboard I got. But the computer itself is made from Micron with a P3 processor and an Award Bios. Although, I have not removed the entries.

Then go ahead and try.

Would upgrading the BIOS help resolve this problem?

Not really. CDROM compatibilities were solved long ago. The only ones showing up lately are usually with DVD drives.

Thanks a lot for all your help!

Cd-rom is still not working properly. I am able to insert a disk but the cd-rom will not read it. The problem actually shows, under the Device Manager, on the primary and secondary ultra ata controllers.

Just an addition to further clarify the problem, when I open up My Computer, I do not see the cd-rom drive on the listings below.

To paraphrase ajzchips:

Well, I think those pretty little yellow circles with the question marks are quite cute in their own strange way. :)

It prompted me to remove the parent device.

If I remove the parent device and the primary and secondary controllers and I restart the computer afterwards, would Windows automatically re-install them or do I have to manually do it?

Thanks!

It should pick them up automatically.
