Sudden CMOS checksum error is caused by low or completely dead CMOS backup battery (usually standard CR2032 on all newer boards).

CMOS Checksum Error; ABIT SH6 motherboard.

Hi...
I had a similar problem on an ABIT SH6 board.

I replaced the battery, had the BIOS chip re-programmed, still got same problem.

Even after "clear CMOS" and several restart attempts, it still reports "CMOS Checksum Error".

Am I right in thinking that the 'CMOS' chip is in fact the Electrically Eraseable Programmable Logic Device (ATMEL ATF 16V8C) at location U24 adjacent to the BIOS chip?

This is a surface mounted PLCC package with five pins on each side.

It is feasible with care and a steady hand to swap this chip.

I'd be interested in any feedback on this.

@Dave: you broke the rules. Don't post twice on the same problem. See my reply on the other thread.

Sorry Nick. I thought I was "replying" to a thread that was already cross posted, albeit by two separate people.
FWIW I didn't actually post the identical reply in each thread.

Understood; but it would have been better to start a new post for your particular problem. :)
