Are you by any chance using WDM drivers on Windows 98 (First Edition)? The First Edition only supports VXD drivers (same as Windows 95), FYI.

not sure

Then forget what I mentioned previously. You may have to manually select the playback/record device from a dropdown menu in your Sound Properties. This may be necessary when your soundcard isn't configured as your primary/default playback device (i.e. when you have a modem with wave-out support, etc.)

oh

Are you installing the drivers that came with the mobo? Are you using generic drivers you downloaded from somewhere?
Why don't you tell us what motherboard you have...

You have a sound chip right next to your second PCI slot (next to the edge of the motherboard). Post everything written on it.

Sorry, my fault, that wasn't your sound chip. That's your Super I/O controller chip. If you have AC97 sound, then your chip is most probably a lot smaller, but shouldn't be too far from your I/O chip.

How did you identify it as a SoundMax in the first place? Was this how the Windows Device Manager identified it?

You might have one of the chip models listed here:

This board can have either Realtek ALC100 or Analog Devices AD1881 (called SoundMax). What's your BIOS ID string?

it is i810-47b27x-atc7400mc-ns

v1.x boards have BIOS strings like this:
09/10/1999-i810-47B27X-ATC7400MC-NS
ATC7400M Ver:1.0r03

v2.x boards with ALC100:
10/23/2000-i810-47B27X-ATC7400MC-KO
ATC7400M VER:2.1r01

v2.x boards with AD1881:
10/31/2000-i810-AD1881X-ATC7400MC-QT
ATC7400M VER:2.1r01

Don't know which chip was used on v1.x boards - the best way is to find it. According to Atrend, it's "U20 near PCI 1" for v2.x boards, hope that it's same for 1.x boards.

De-install old Sounddrivers and try the Realtek ones from here :
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/dla ... tware=True

If they don't work too try Sisoft Sandra or AIDA32 or other tools to identify your Soundchip .

Or try AD1881 drivers from an Atrend mirror site :
ftp://ftp.univ-lille1.fr/pub/vendor/atr ... 000/SOUND/
>> large size driver

ftp://ftp.univ-lille1.fr/pub/vendor/atr ... nd/Analog/
>> small size driver
