hi
a friend has a PIII with a MSI 6163 pro m/board
it has an old bios from 1999
they have just backed up the pc and wiped the HD and want to install XP
but it won't boot off the cd
it seems that a new bios will help
From looking at
http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/b ... ME=MS-6163
I should update my bios from reading one of the update bugs above

the bios is from one of the earlier 1999 ones

i have downloaded w6163v3a.exe for them onto a floppy on my pc

i unpacked the w6163v3a.exe file
and got 2 txt files
and autoexec.bat
and w6163imj.3a0
and AWFL783M.exe then took the floppy to their house.
i copied them to c:\test
and did AWFL783M w6163imj.3a0
(the autoexec.bat prog wouldn't run-got error message)
this started a program 'flash memory writer V7.83 M4'
and ran it.
but at the end the system still shows W6163MJ V3.10 101100
on startup-so it hasn't installed the 3.a bios yet ?

A is hexadecimal for 10. The ID from that BIOS is:
10/11/2000-i440BX-W977-2A69KM4KC-00
and the message is:
W6163MJ V3.10 101100
You have successfully installed the latest BIOS.

thanks !
i saw the 3.10 but thought it was still 3.1
what do the other numbers mean ?
looking at http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/b ... ME=MS-6163 it looks like the 3.a bios is 2001
so the 2000 confused me

10/11/2000 and 101100 mean the same - the date the BIOS was created, usually in American format (11th October 2000). It had to be tested and therefore may not have been released or loaded onto the website until 2001.
The i440BX is the chipset, the W977 is the Winbond Super I/O chip and the 2A69KM4KC-00 is explained on the main Wim's BIOS website under "Award BIOS IDs"

thank you very much for the above info :) much apreciated.
the flash program did run
but now the pc speed is 333mhz on the boot screen, not 500mhz-so i'll have to change some of the settings ?

Does that board support 100 MHz FSB ? I suspect not. I f you've got a 5x100 MHz chip it will likely only run at 5x66 MHz, but I'm not expert on Intel CPUs.

MSI 6163 series are built of VIA or Intel FSB100 chipsets so have a look into your manual how to achieve FSB100 - either jumper or Bios-Setting if CPU PnP/jumperless
