Specs:Pentium 2
BIOS: V4.51PG (Award)
P61440BX/B1S
OS:Win98 SP2
CD-Rom:LG 52x

Building a PC, have HD's working but cant get CD-rom to be detected (in DOS or WIN), without the cd rom cant finish the set up for WIN ie printer ports etc
Does anyone know what i can do to fix this prob

What cables are you using (40/80 core)?
What is connected where on each cable?
How are the drives jumpered?
Does the BIOS self test identify the drive?

The CD-rom is conected by audio cable to the moutherbord and the CD-rom is conected by IDE cable to IDE2 (where the HD's are conected to IDE1 by IDE cable, and the CD jumper is set to master. The BIOS dosent identify the drive either, but i know the CD drive is fully working.

Same one as used in an older computer, and its a standard ribbion cable, not sure if its a 40/80 core.

Double-check all connections (power included).

If that doesn't work, see if the CD-ROM can be detected on IDE1.

Is the BIOS set to recognize this device...and if so...is it detected during POST?

yep ive checked all the connections on the Cd-Rom, and it cannon be detected on IDE1 either, the drivers have been installed into dos and it still isnt dected.

Enter Bios, Standard CMOS setup. Set all IDE-ports to auto-detection.

Make sure you did not forgot to attach the power cable to your CD. Did you try another IDE-cable ?

If you have two HDD try to connect the second HDD to IDE2 as MAster and the CD as slave behind thgis HDD.

Yep, we had switched the IDE cable to one me were sure worked and it still had the same problem and also we tryed puting the slave drive with the CR-rom

I still have not heard you say if the CD-ROM is detected by the BIOS during POST...or not.

sorry, nope the CD-rom drive is not dected in BIOS during Post

I'm sorry...I just re-read your earlier post where you mentioned that.

Does your BIOS have a CD-ROM selection for the IDE? I assume that the Auto-Detection method Denniss mentioned did not work.

its np, in BIOS there is no CD-rom setting, only "Auto", "User" or "none" and the Auto dectection does not pick it up

Try to set the port the CDROM is attached to to None (instead of user or auto), if there's not something broken in your installation it should be picked up after your HDD's have been initialized in the boot phase.

Maybe there's a bug in this Bios, did you try to update to the latest Bios by QDI? AFAIK it's somewhere in the beta sector at www.qdigrp.com .

Try this trick. Unplug all your IDE cables from all other drives except your CDROM. Then power the system on and enter BIOS setup. Check there to make sure it shows up. If BIOS doesn't show it, then nothing (any other software) will see it. Also make sure your jumper settings are correct.
Primary IDE port: Set 1 drive to master and the other to slave
Secondary IDE port: set 1 drive to master and the other to slave
