Drives not recognized properly???

Hi All -

Not sure if this is the right forum for this, but her goes.

I was fooling with a computer at work to see why the HD was running so slow and decided to test my own here at home. Using the Seagate UATA100 Utility, my machine reports this about my drives:

(Sorry about the table...how do you add spaces so it formats correctly here???)

Drive System Device Device
Number Setting Maximum Name

Port 1 MW-DMA1 MW-DMA1 WD AC2850F
Master 13MB/s 13MB/s

Port 1 MW-DMA0 MW-DMA0 Maxtor 7540AV
Slave 4MB/s 4MB/s

Port 2 MW-DMA0 MW-DMA2 Sony CDU621-D
Master 4MB/s 16MB/s 12-24X, PCAV

I have 2 questions here.

Since my board has an i430VX chipset, I know that it can't do independent device timings on the SAME channel, so that means the chipset will be setup for 4MB/s on Port 1...correct?

For Port 2, I don't understand why the system reports this drive to be MW-0, while the device posts MW-2 (which it is capable of). I assume the BIOS sets the chipset up again at 4MB/s correct? I couldn't seem to force it to PIO-4 by locking it in the BIOS that way either.

Thoughts...???

I think you should try to slave that Sony from the WD and put the Maxtor on the second channel, then check again to see what you get...

I was planning to do that anyway, since the Maxtor contains my swap and browser caches, in an attempt to speed things up some, until I get my final BIOS patch to 128GB from Jan.

But I don't understand why the secondary channel, with the lone CDROM on it, isn't being setup correctly?
