Hi,

had a 40GB IDE drive (working fine) and upgraded it to a Maxtor 120GB drive. However, the BIOS does not recognize the HDD. Even if I jumper it to 4092 Cyl. it cannot be accessed.
Unfortunately, Gigabyte does not provide a recent BIOS fix for this mainboard. :(

Any chance you could help?

BIOS Date: 09/03/99
BIOS Type: Award Modular BIOS v4.51PG
BIOS ID: 09/03/1999-693-596-W947-2A6LGG0AC-00
Mainboard: Gigabyte GA-6VA
Chipset: Via Apollo Pro Plus (692/596)

The latest BIOS at GIGABYTE's site is:
http://ftp.gigabyte.com.tw/support/temp/6va_f2.zip
10/21/1999-693-596-W977-2A6LGG0AC-00

...and our large HDD support utility mentions:
BIOS already supports HDDs over 32GB & 64GB

Thanks for your reply.
So what do you think: Do I have to upgrade my BIOS (there is less than two months difference between the latest version and my BIOS version) or might the problem be located somewhere else?

If you don't try the newer BIOS, you'll (& we'll) never find out.

Hi again,

it was the HDD! After I got another model it all worked fine. Tip: Be careful if your Maxtor 4G120 says "Maxtor ROMULUS" - there is an error in the HDD's firmware.

Bye,
