how can i get this bios to recognize 40 gb hdd?i checked msi's site but got no help.

Hmm, Google hits against MS6153, MS6156, MS6156ZX, and Sky Power.
Do you have another message like "W6156ZXF1 V1.0" or "W6156MS V1.0 011399" which appears at the top left of the memory count screen ?

yes,i have this
bios date: 10/20/98
bios type: award modular bios v4.51pg
bios id: 10/20/98-i440bx-w977-2a69km4gc-00
bios eval: w6156zxms v1.3 041599
chipset: intel 440bx/zx rev 3
i wasn't sure if the bios version was 4.51 or 1.3.

Award 4.51PG Bios with MSI 1.3 version number - latest is 1.6 and should support your HDD fine
