A BIOS upgrade MAY offer 80GB; but as a matter of fact, I think, probably not.

With that chipset, depending on the manufacturer and how much they put into the BIOS upgrades they make available, you might get to 80GB but if you do I am sure you will be pushing it. I recently installed a 40GB drive on a Gigabyte board thinking it may not recognise 60GB - it would have supported 60GB but not 80GB. And this was with the newer BX chipset.

The experience with the 40GB hard drive also was surprising - the drive would not even detect before the BIOS upgrade. I thought the drive would detect but only up to the limit supported by the previous BIOS.

@Ritchie: excuse me, but you are wrong. Take a look at the list of tested patched Award BIOSes and you'll find several LX chipset boards supporting up to 137GB (128GiB).

@imal: The latest AMI BIOS released by MSI for the MS-6118 is 1.4, available from http://www.msi-computer.de/produkte/pro ... rod_id=125. The message it puts in the top left of the memory count screen is A6618MS V1.4B 011598 . What message does yours provide ?

At the main site
http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/d ... 308&kind=1 there is an Award BIOS which is also quite old:
BIOS ID string: 02/12/98-i440LX-W977-2A69JM49C-00
BIOS OEM string: W6118MS V1.1 041498
INT13h Extensions...Present: new-style
New-style code found at 3524
=> 32GB bug patched successfully
This does appear to be patchable to support large HDD, but that would be at your own risk. (Thinks: I may have this board in a drawer at work). Would you like to try this? The alternative is an add-in board with its own BIOS (Promise, Maxtor, etc)
