When I get into the BIOS to detect the nwe HDD, it starts searching it but then it gets stuck and I've to reset the PC because it doesn't respond.

HDD: Western Digital 40GB 7200RPM.
I tried with the cables my actual HDD has (Primary Master) and with Primary slave too but nothing happened.

If the drive is sitting by itself on the cable (no other device connected), connect it on the black connector, blue connector to the motherboard. On the drive itself remove the jumper to set it for "Single Drive" mode, not "Master", else it will look for a slave device forever.
