80 Gb 10/19/1999 - i440BX - smc602 - 6A69KM3JC-00 Ran into problems trying to run this HDD on a HP vectra vei8. Downloaded FlashBIOS from HP-site – that didn’t help. Came across this site, which gave me new hope. However, I can’t find anywhere exactly how to use the BIOS-with-patch. My best guess would be : run the HP FlashBIOS again, after replacing the “QHW1001.bin” on my floppy with the new – patched – version that appeared after unzipping the download from this site. Is that right? And: should I copy the “BrioBax” file, which also turned up in the unzip, to my floppy too? greetings, thanks in advance, wim

All you should do is replace the *.bin file in the floppy.

thanks ajzchips - it worked fine: 80 Gb now firmly installed in CMOS, with a nice long line appearing as the new BIOS-id during POST . However : when trying to format the new HDD, in FDISK only 12624Mb is given as the size of it. Can anyone tell me how to take this hurdle?

Correction : Checking again, I found that in CMOS the HDD is given as 81 Mb, not 81 Gb, as I first , wishfully, thought to see ! Help!

Showing MB or GB is a known bug in some cases. Don't worry.

FDISK has a bug too, but don't worry either. It'll FDISK the full 80GB of it.
There's an FDISK update from Microsoft's site if it still worries you, but the only fix deals with displaying the correct size.

thanks for your reassuring words. i still worry a bit, however, because it's not just the Mb/Gb bug: the other data in CMOS are also very different from the HDD-specs that I found elsewhere: the numbers of cylinders (given as 9964 instead of 16383) and of heads (given as 255 instead of 16). - ???

Don't worry about that either :)

If it works fine, then all's well.

you were right, after formatting, under windows, 76,3 Gb is available. thanks a lot!

I usually recommend UBCD for that kind of stuff:

hello ajzchips - looked at ubcd; don't quite understand yet in what stage it would have been of use with the problem that I had. besides: from your reactions I get the impression that the "misreadings" of the HDD specs in BIOS and FDISK are quite normal , when using this (kind of) patch. I always like to understand things, so : does the patch make these specs irrelevant - in stead of adjusting them to new values? greetings, wim g.

The patch has nothing to do with what your FDISK sees; it only has a minor bug sometimes with the MB and GB display.
UBCD has a nice collection of HDD fdiskers, etc. which don't have the FDISK bug...

is what the BIOS sees also not related to the patch?

True... but, the bug only has to do with what the BIOS displays (MB vs. GB), and not what the BIOS interprets.
