OK so I've looking all over the internet and I need help upgrade to 48-bit lba in my bios. It's code is 06/19/2001-694x-686B-6A6LJL7BC-00 and it's award version 6.00PG. If anyone could help me out I would be eternally greatful.

Is a 694X 64-bit capable?

You should at least be able to recognize 137 GB...

IIRC, the VIA694X was the first 48-bit LBA capable chipset for the S370 platform, but, this was usually "enabled" in more recent BIOS releases, which is obviously what you're seeking.

Anyway, you posted the BIOS string. How about the BIOS message?

ajzchips you are right it is a s370 as to the bios message I'm not 100% sure what you mean, if you cost post an example I would be happy to post it! I also relized I forgot to post a link to the motherboard, which is -> http://www.lannerinc.com/product_detail ... ucts_id=57# The main problem is the company never posted bios updates and contacting them has been a troublesome. THe other problem is the board is an sbc and might need some kinda of special bios add-ons. So is there any hope for my bios??? (thanks for the quick replies as well guys).

Shouldn't it say 82c694?

In any case, I guess it is the 686B that would need to be 48-bit capable. I'll have to look in my datasheet to see what's what with that.

AFAIK 48 Bit LBA is not related to hardware but to software (Bios or driver). As long as the HDD is detected as 128GB in Bios users with Linux or W2K/XP with recent service packs should be able to access space beyond 128GB via the Operating system.

If your Bios goes whacky with a big HDD you may need to limit it to report only 32GB, all above should then be accessible with you OS.

AH, my understanding was that I could use the drive up untill the bios limit and then there could be data access issuses. I did load up freebsd on it and it did detect my hard drive for the proper size but, warned that I need to give the bios defined disk geometry and not that of the detected "physical" geometry. Anyone know a way to test to see if I can "fill" the area outside the bios define geometry and/or test read's/writes?

Indeed it is an sbc and I love it! My plan with it is to fit it in an old rackmount army power distribution box, which is 19" L x 5.25"(3U) W x about 3" deep. I will be using it for network storage and a webserver which is much less power hungry than my current Dual P2 400 with 5 1.6" 9.gb scsi drive and it will be much quieter than my current server as well. Plus the power distro box looks great very smooth, no sharp edges.

Ask the manufacturer whether a new Bios is available or not.

Add a big size HDD and create a partition within Bios limits thus 127GB. Create a partition above and try to fill it with Data,, at least 20Gb of Data should be there. Then check data integrety in both partitions.

So You where right I didn't even need a bios update, the drive shows up as 136gb in the bios but, I can write to the whole drive with no problem.
