Asrock P4S61 not supporting 1600 X 900

Hello,
I recently updated my monitor to 20" WS (Acer V203H). My mobo is Asrock P4S61 using SiS 661FX video chip. After updating the SiS driver I got the native resolution of 1600 X 900 to show in the Properties tab.

However whenever I click on this, the screen just goes BLACK and I have to revert back to a lower resolution which stretches the screen.

Is the problem due to VBios or SiS 661 FX cannot support 1600 X900?

Can anyone please guide me how to update the VBios (If the problem is due to that). I cannot locate the VBios in my system in the first place.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

which drivers did you install? please post the version of your video bios. it's available on the advanced tab in the display drivers tab.

Thanks cp for your reply..

Well, I installed the latest drivers of SiS as recommended here:
They are: 1. AGP(GART) driver 1.21
2. UniVGA3 3.90

I also checked the bios version as suggested by you;

It says:

Company Silicon Integrated Systems Corporation
Product SiS 661FX_661GX_M661FX_M661MX_M661GX
Graphic Engine Mirage
Software Version 3.90
Driver Version 3.90
BIOS(OEM Product Rev) 0.65.00

Hope this helps..

I would be eagerly waiting for your reply..

Thank You once again!

The main BIOS version is 2.5 and according to ASROCK website this is the latest one available.

Do you feel the problem is due to the VBios version I posted?

Is there a BIOS with updated VBIOS available for my motherboard?

Looking forward for your reply...

Thanks!

i must have missed the bios on our download site.
download the patched bios from our download site and flash it. make sure to have the 3.90 drivers properly installed and report back with the vbios version.

Hello Cp!

I followed your instructions and flashed the BIOS with the one available here.

Installed the uvga 3.90 driver.

Now the VBios version is 2.51.00

But when I try to set the resolution to 1600 x 900 my monitor says "The current setting is not supported"

Currently I am at 1280 X 720 and this resolution is better than those I was getting previously. But still no 1600 X 900!

If there is still any other thing to try, please do post here.

By the way, a million thanks for your time and the support that you have been extending throughout!!

Keep up the good work!

Hi maildc16

I'm facing a problem almost identical to yours. I use an IBM ThinkCentre (now Lenovo) E50 PC which uses the SiS 661fx chipset.
A couple of days ago, I upgraded from a 17"CRT screen to the Samsung B2030, a 20" widescreen format 1600x900 resolution LCD.
I had to update the BIOS from a 0.65.00 to 2.43.00, besides updating the graphics driver from the SiS download page to the current UniVGA3 v3.90 before finally being able to see the 1600x900 in the display settings.

But, on selecting the 1600x900 with 60Hz, the screen image does not occupy the entire 20" space and gets tiled, of which the lower tiled half of the screen gets garbled like crazy. I also get the message 'Not optimum resolution - use 1600x900, 60Hz'

I don't know if I need a separate/standalone graphics card or if theres something else im missing out on.
cp, could you help?

best regards
harpreet

The Windows SiS driver doesn't support any resolutions whose modelines are not supported by the video bios. And the video bios you are using obviously doesn't support 1600x900. I don't know if the VGA BIOS for the 6351 (instead of the 6330) devices works but you could give it a try. Just make sure to have a working backup copy of your current BIOS handy.
if it doesn't work you either need an add-on VGA or just move to Linux. The 3rd party SiS driver at Linux supports virtually any resolution you could imagine.

thanks so much cp, really appreciate your reply and clarification. i guess ill invest in an add-on graphic card (thats what you mean by add-on VGA i guess) to resolve this issue. somehow never understood or felt comfortable with linux :)
