No option for 1440 x 900 screen resolution

Hi,
I am new to this Forum and hope someone will help me. I am fairly competent with PCs, though I am at a dead end with this.
I just got myself a flat screen monitor (Samsung SyncMaster 920NW). I plugged it in and the resolution was very odd, so I went into Control Panel to alter it but there is no option for 1440 x 900, which I need. Samsung Website states that the VBIOS may need to be updated if this option is not available within the Control panel.
The highest I have is 1280 x 1024 which makes everything looked squashed.
The info I have gathered is as follows...
BIOS Type: AMI
BIOS Date: January 31st 2004
BIOS ID: 62-1029-001199-00101111-040201-SiS650-NECC_000
BIOS OEM: 8SIMLNF V1.0y - 1.0y
Chipset: SiS 651 rev 2
SuperIO: Winbond 697HF rev 2 at port 002E
Manufacturer: Packard Bell NEC
Motherboard: 00000000000000000000000
A BIOS Update has been detected for your PC.
All assistance would be most welcome. I thought this would be a simple pluig-and-play but not the case.
