ati finally replied (after just 13 days) and they just cut'n'pasted some information from their web support:

[begins ati quote]

Bios settings play a big part in system performance. Especially the ones related to AGP. I have included some AGP specific BIOS settings that may help to correct your freezing issue. Motherboard manufacturers update their BIOS's from time to time, so it would also be good check for updates. Updates can give enhancements to older BIOS's.

· Video BIOS Shadow - DISABLED
· Init Primary Display - AGP
· AGP MASTER 1W/S READ/WRITE - ENABLED/DISABLED (Toggle this option)
· AGP 4x/8x Mode - DISABLED
· AGP Fast Write - DISABLED
· AGP Aperture size - 128 MB
· AGP Driving Control - AUTO
· AGP Performance Control - ENABLED/DISABLED (Toggle this option)
· Assign IRQ for VGA - ENABLED
· System Bios Cacheable - DISABLED
· Video BIOS Cacheable - DISABLED
· VIDEO RAM Cacheable - DISABLED
· Read Around Write - ENABLED/DISABLED (toggle this setting)
· PnP OS installed - YES

If you continue to get no display from bios or doesnt boot properly, please test the card in a different system.

[ends ati quote]

the problem is that i just have a few of these available. Any further hint?

Thanks.

Check out the entire bios and list which ones you do have available AND set those you have got to the recommended values, save and exit, let the system boot, power down, put in new card and see if it will work. Question, does this ATi card have a power connector on the card itself and did you connect that?

No, it does not. I will try as you suggest and keep you updated. Thanks.

I guess the best thing to do when changing any card in the computer, you should remove the mothercoard's battery for some time (like 30 seconds) so all the old configuration is erased from the CMOS. You will just have to set the date and time and the BIOS Setup and Load the Optimized Settings, Save and Exit. and then everything should work alright with no problems.

j_saade25, thanks for your hint, but it is not the case: i am not dealing with a NEW card, it is just my card that was working properly BEFORE bios upgrade and stopped working AFTER bios upgrade.

I restored the old BIOS (011.p04) -thanks to edwin- and, guess what?...

... the card works again!!!

This version does not have an AGP/PCI option: i just set agp aperture size to 256MB and it works.

Thanks to all.

Here is a little suggestion from me:

If you have much RAM (>768MB) you may keep the apreture size setting.

If you dont have much RAM (<768MB) Try a little apreture size, such as 32 or 64MB

The apreture size is the amount of ram the card uses from the system RAM (additionally to the card's ram)

;)

for a correct definition of AGP Aperture Size please read this:
