Hi everybody,
Does anybody know where I can get a BIOS-upgrade for my computer ?
I think I do need this upgrade to have my PC work as I want it to.
If you need further information about my PC, don't hesitate to ask me (I think I mentioned enough but... nobody knows...)
Thanks in advance.
Nicolas

So what is your computer ? I can't tell from the information you have provided, though I suspect it's some Hewlett Packard machine.

Hi,
You're completely right !
I realized that it was a big mistake to buy this kind of PC... Well, that's the one I have so, can you help me ?
I've already surfed on HP site but I found nothing...
Thanks
Nicolas

You still didn't say which model. Google gives a couple of hits, e.g. HP Pavilion 9800, HP Pavilion Notebook, so the information you have given is not enough. Find the model number and enter it at http://www.hp.com/cposupport/software.html. Also, if you check the motherboard you may find it was sold to HP by someone like Asus. A utility like Unicore BIOS Agent (free from the link at www.wimsbios.com) may provide more info.

OK, the parts breakdown for that says the motherboard is Osprey-GC K62 SuperI/O part no. D7352-69005
A search for Osprey GC on Google brings up a mention of the 6640C athttp://bizforums.itrc.hp.com/cm/Questio ... f9,00.html where it is identified as Asus P5S-VM - but the part number for the Osprey-GC when used in the 6640C is D7352-69004.
It mentions that Jan Steunebrink has patched the Asus BIOS.
Please check the motherboard and see if you can find "P5V-SM" or similar printed on it.

Some of us do not have your encyclopaedic memory, Edwin
Must add it to my "useful bits" page.

Greetings:
Assuming your mobo is an Asus P5S-VM with an HP "customized" Phoenix BIOS, I can point you in the right direction.
There is some sort of undocumented flash lockout in the BIOS or the mobo that will prevent flashing the BIOS offered on the Jan Steunebrink site.
On my HP Pavilion 6640c, I defeated the lockout by installing a new BIOS ROM chip that I bought from BadFlash.com, which flashed the patched BIOS before sending it to me. The whole deal cost about $25.
The patched BIOS is based on an Award BIOS. It supports K6-2+ and K6-III+ CPUs and includes many features not found in the very limited HP/Phoenix BIOS. I recommend it highly.
Also, save your old BIOS ROM chip, so that in the event you need to reload the OS or other software from the Restore CDs, you can reinstall it. Otherwise, the Restore CDs will refuse to work.
If you have any questions, I'll try to answer them.
Good Luck.
Ed
p.s. If you end up using the patched BIOS, drop a thank you email to Jan Steunebrink. He's a good guy who has written dozens of patched BIOS for free.

I'll second that. His tag on this board is "biosman".
