A little beyond the scope of the site, but why not...

As I understand it, the GPS2 has the firmware in ROM - it cannot be upgraded at all. This suggests that the unit is not end-user serviceable, and you'll probably have to send it in for repair.

Have you opened it up to see what kind of chip you're dealing with?

Subject: Garmin BIOS
My apologies i've typed that wrong I actually have a GARMIN GPS 12 and yes the chips it has are: an AMR chip being AM29LV4008T0-120EC

TWO Winbond Chips being W24258Q-70LE

Two diffrent Garmin chips wich i haven't been abl to find any information on, being numbered
590-00009-00
Japan
9941KU002
and
5900000600
IBM40101LQ
26H5245
Korea

and one other chip, with a bold i insignia,( could it be Intel?)
Numbered: L186EB16
L9348A30E

again as yet i haven't been able to identify this chip

I can down load program updates from Garmins' web sit and have done succefully in the past however, my problem is that for some reason the chip has been erased, and without being able to set the unit to upload i can't replace the program. I therefor believe that there must be a flash programm to do this as i have been told that it can be re-loaded.

so if you can help I would be greatly appreciative.
