Sony Viao

Help
I have a sony viao pcg grx316 mp
I was up grading the system with a new harddrive and re install win xp
When the screen started to show gibberish
Now I can't even read the bios set up page as the lines on the screen make it look like the screen resolution is set to high
I've tried disconnecting the display data lead from the motherboard and running it from an external monitor with no joy
If anyone can help i would be greatful
