8766C motherboard connectors

Does anyone know what the third 3-wire connector to the motherboard is for?
We have the 20 pin connector and the CPU fan connector. In addition there is a 3-wire connector, which resides very close to the 20-pin connector.
I have to replace the power unit. The new power unit does not come with the third 3-wire connector.
I would like to know if the computer would function correctly without this third wire connected to the board.
Thanks.

Good question!

I have one of these too, and noticed the connector as well, but didn't pay attention to what it might be for. Now you have me curious as well!

What OS do you have loaded on yours...XP? If so, are you having any trouble with it?

Thanks for the input.

I have a board (Intel 815-based) from a HP machine which has a connector that looks like standard 3-pin fan connector - it's marked "POWER FAN". However, it's not a fan connector. Two pins are GND and the last one is some kind of "sense" pin. When the connector is left open, the board BIOS says that the fan is not connected correctly. The fix is to put a jumper over the "sense" and center (GND) pin.
Looks like the connector has no purpose - except to force people buying HP parts...

I think it's there to monitor the speed of the PSU fan.

The machine has a fan in the PSU, and one for the CPU.

Only one fan speed (CPU Fan Speed) is measured by the BIOS...the others are Power Fan Speed (says "Ignore") and the Chassis Fan Speed (says "N/A").

I thought that too - but when I connected a fan there (removed the 12V wire from the connector and connected to 12V), the error message sometimes appeared and sometimes not. I found the jumper trick on forums somewhere on HP site.

Bios says something about fan failure.
