i had to do an upgrade on my hp pavilion 3216 from win 95 to win 98, after installing win 98 it came back to me saying something about windows protection error C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\vmm32.vxd file missing. i went to the hp support site on my notebook and it told me something about a hp tatoo. however i found that it told me to do a bios update, i did this using a flash utility luna14.exe or sumthing. i created a floppy for booting and ran the full flash. it asked me to reboot, i did this and the pc would not display anything on the monitor. i did not copy the old bios as i learnt to do this after my little episode. PLEASE HELP!

At least some help for you.

The missing vmm32.vxd is a windows driver. I don't know why HP would have told you to update the bios. All you needed was a 98 bootdisk and a 98 CD. There is a program on the bootdisk (can't remember what its called, search the help files) that will let you exctract files from you 98 CD and put them on your harddrive. You could have found the vmm32.vxd on the CD and copied it to C:\windows\systems folder. The vmm32.vxd I think is in cab 54 on the windows 98 CD. The only problem is now you can't try this until someone alse helps you fix you bios. Sorry I can't help you with the bios, I have my own bios questions posted (don't know much about the bios).

I don't know this model, however have you done the standard things that the main site FAQ recommends, e.g.
- clear CMOS
- try with an ISA video card
- see if it will boot a floppy (may need to press F1 to continue if you just cleared CMOS) ?
