com port and keyboard error?

When I connect some device to the com port,like an external modem, the keyboard don't work and the Num Lock indicator flash sometimes. As a result, the computer can't work. But It can function well if nothing connected to the com port. Are there some problem with the BIOS?

Is it ATX or AT board? If it's AT then the COM port connector might be connected the wrong way to the header on the board (check pin 1 orientation)
