cold start OK, but will not restart

Motherboard: MSI MS-6524G
BIOS Version: W6524SMS V1.7 042303

This is my first post here . I'm new to all this BIOS stuff, and only tried updating the BIOS in a last-ditch attempt to cure frequent freeze-ups...

I updated the BIOS to the above version (previously W6524o1 v1.09 030102). Now, the computer won't do a warm restart (from the XP shutdown menu). A cold start (shutdown and hit the power button) works fine.

Any suggestions? Do I have the right BIOS (this page suggests I do.) Do I need to change some CMOS settings?

If your Bios version identifyer was W6524O1 then you had an OEM-Version of this board for Tiny/Time Computers. As you can see nobody guarantees your OEM board does work with a retail Bios (Version identifyer W6524SMS.

You may try to manually Clear CMOS and then load Setup Defaults in Bios.

Thanks for your help, Denniss. The computer was from Tiny. I doubt I'll be able to find exactly the right BIOS update, as the company no longer exists. However, if the retail BIOS fixes the instability, then failure to restart willl be a small price to pay. I'll try manually clearing the CMOS, as you suggest.

Denniss,

Clearing the CMOS, and then loading "optimized defaults" did the trick. Despite using the retail-version BIOS on an OEM board, everything seems to be working normally, including warm restart. The computer has not yet frozen up, so I might have fixed that problem too.

Many thatnks for your help! :)
