256 - 128 Mb

Hi friends ,
I have brought new 256Mb ram 133Mhz to increase pc speed , it shows only 128Mb . It has 16chips 8 chips on each side . I check motherboard manual it says only 66 mhz and 100mhz accepted . I search 100/66 mhz ram everywhere but in vain . now 256Mhz is useless even i cannot insatall latest os on 256 ram it gives memory error . Is there any other way to accept 256 ram.

What board do you have? Do you have the latest BIOS?

With memory errors your stick may be damaged .

I have pcchip motherboard M730 . and i check on other computer it shows 256 .

Does it display errors on the other boards too, besides its correct size recognition?

Clutching at straws: can you disable auto detection of RAM speed in the BIOS? It should not matter, but...
It may say "RAM speed by SPD" or similar.

It does not give any error on other motherboards , and i have old bios ( AMI bios ) NOw tell me how to diable autodetection RAM ?

Look in the CMOS set up menus. I don't know your particular BIOS, I am afraid.

Don't know this board either, but his RAM speed shouldn't matter?
PC133 stick will work fine at 66 and 100MHz, as well as at 133MHz...
Chipset issue perhaps?? Maybe an M730 can't handle that density. I'm assuming the memory stick is good...

Shouldn't is the word. I had a friend with a BIOS some years ago which would not take faster RAM because it didn't understand the info in the Serial Presence Detect (SPD) chip on the DIMM. When you set the speed manually it was fine. This is the same friend who later had a PNY DIMM which had the wrong size value in the SPD with another (Intel) motherboard which did not have the facility to turn off auto detect. The shop replaced it.

BTW.: The SPD is EEPROM - has anyone tried writing?

My brother is a SEEPROM ace (also programs DSPs and Hitachi microcontrollers) and could probably do it, if it was vital. He became interested when he was fixing car radios and now has a range of jigs, but I don't think he does DIMMs - yet...
