Single / Double Sided

How can I tell whether a RAM chip is single or double sided, either by looking at it or by it's specifications? I know when double sided is required, and I know that while double sided means chips on both sides of the module on SDR chips this is not always the case on DDR chips.

In the "Collected Wisdom" section there's an id method for SDRAM DIMMs. I don't know what would be analogous for DDR.

nope. a logically single-sided module can physically have chips on both sides of the module. single-sided/double-sided is about the logical organization of the memory not the physical chips.
Some boards have three slots and only room for 5 banks. You can thus fit 2 double-sided and one single-sided module at a maximum. memory slot count doesn't say anything about the actual amount of memory that can be fitted and I'm talking about modules with the same density chips.
