i've got a compaq presario 700 laptop with
128mb onboard memory (some models come with 256, not mine)
1ghz amd mobile duron
20GB hard drive
it lags while loading stuff example: internet explorer, msn, startup, ...

I found a 64mb ram thing it fits nicely in the mini ram slot (i dunno how its called on laptops) it boots into XP but still tells me that ive got 112MB ram(the onboard VGA uses 16mb) i know 64mb is not much but im sure it would load just a bit faster.

and if i remove the ram nothing happens (the system continues to run) so i guess it's the crappy Compaq bios that's the problem.

help !

Nope. Could also be the hardware that does not like it. It may even be the memory stick that has gone kaputt. What is the brand/model of that memory stick?

no idea what brand, but it works fine on another laptop

it might as well be a pc66 instead of pc100 maybe thats why its not working :(

yep, or ECC where this one does not want it or maybe even (although very rare these days) a requirement of some Compaq tattoo in its chips.

so i guess in that case all i can do is
go to a store and ask them to upgrade it.
